Are you worried about Identity Theft???
In the news
lately you have seen two high-profile cases of personal
information falling into the wrong hands which raises
fears of fraud and identity theft.
Police and the
federal privacy commissioner are investigating a major
security breach at CIBC's Talvest Mutual Funds involving
the disappearance of a computer hard drive containing
vital personal information on almost half a million
clients.
CIBC says a
backup computer file "had gone missing" in transit
between Talvest's Montreal and Toronto offices just
before Christmas. It contained information used in
opening and administering about 470,000 accounts of
current and former Talvest fund clients across Canada.
The information may have included names, addresses,
signatures, date of birth, bank account numbers,
beneficiary information and social insurance numbers.
TJX companies
in Framingham, Massachusetts who owns Winners and
HomeSense says someone hacked into its computer system
and put an personal information of its customers who
have paid with credit cards, debit cards, and cheques.
The credit information covered transactions in 2003 from
May to December last year.
There is a
risk the personal banking information would help
fraudsters assume unauthorized credit card purchases.
As a result,
are you afraid of your personal banking information
falling into the wrong hands? What do you think
you can do to prevent that from happening? What can
banks and businesses do to protect you?
